01 / A FORMER LIFE
There was a place.
Flash made the browser a playground. Animations, homemade games, music experiments, and elaborate little websites could live inside a rectangle on a page. For many people, that rectangle was their first encounter with making things for the internet.
Its accessible creative ecosystem helped an entire generation experiment with interactive media. Preservation projects now work to keep many of those creations playable.

Then came the ending.
Adobe ended support as open web standards matured, encouraging creators to migrate. Adobe blocked Flash content in its player beginning January 12, 2021.
December 31 marks Adobe Flash Player support ending, not the disappearance of every Flash work. Emulators and specialist distributions have separate histories.
